Geek Out Commentary: Ghostbusters II

The Geek Out gang concludes October Rocktober Halloween Horror Month with a special Halloween commentary release celebrating the 25th anniversary of Ghostbusters II! Sam will always remember this as the third film he ever saw in theaters back in the summer of 1989 (A year that Jake refers to as possibly the greatest year for film). Chris is amazed by the 4K remaster of the film he grew up loving so much while providing a bit of New York trivia about the movie. Jake reveals his personal favorite scene in the film while Sam observes that while he enjoys the film as a whole, he is always let down by the movie's opening premise. The 2014 Halloween festivities end here but the commentaries continue to gain momentum as the gang prepares for another important anniversary next week...

We were trying to be subtle about the title, we really were, but sometimes you just gotta let it all hang out. This week's episode has Jake and Chris revisit some horror films just before Halloween with middling results. Sam reflects on his schooling after a recent visit to his old alma mater. Chris, Sam, and Jake reflect on their fathers and the different familial values they established. And, true to the title, Sam and Chris recall a very different kind of memory...

Geek Out Commentary: Ghostbusters

The Geek Out enters the final week of October Rocktober Halloween Horror Month by celebrating the 30th anniversary of Ghostbusters. For Sam and Chris, the film is a cultural hallmark along with the accompanying cartoon series. Chris, the former New York City native, provides a bit of a tour of where in the city the exterior shooting locations took place. Sam reveals the recipe for his Ghostbusters-themed cocktail, the Ecto-Cooler. And Jake marvels at the word "dickless". Who you gonna call?

Chris and Sam return from their voyages out of town with Chris detailing his experiences at New York City and New York Comic Con while Sam reveals his respective adventures in Atlanta. In doing so, the discussion turns to all those personal anecdotes which should be at least slightly sexy but, in true Geek Out fashion, turned hilariously awkward. The stories range from East Coast strip clubs to European gay bars to the usual high school romantic awkwardness. Oh, and Jake vehemently defends the unfairly put-upon Aquaman. This time, things get personal.

Geek Out Commentary: The Invisible Man

Jake makes the next pick for October Rocktober's Halloween Horror Month by winding back the clock over eight decades for his personal favorite of the classic Universal monster movies, The Invisible Man. Listen as Jake compares the film to HG Wells' classic novel and his deep appreciation for Claude Rains' masked performance as the title villain. Chris reveals the filming techniques used to create the sinister character which resulted in special effects decades ahead of their time. And Sam is around for moral support. Be sure to check out this blast from the past.

The action-packed discussion that began last week continues here with Jake discussing why Skyrim and Madonna go together like peanut butter and jelly. From there, the conversation largely goes into a timely talk about the gang's favorite horror films. Chris talks about his love of the Nightmare on Elm Street series which has been reinvigorated by watching the critically acclaimed documentary, Never Sleep Again, tracing the history of the franchise. Sam reveals the types of horror movies he grew up with and how he didn't really start watching slasher movies until a bit later in life. Jake observes that he didn't start watching horror movies in general until the other Geek Out guys but has since embraced the genre, particularly the Halloween films. Finally, the entire gang reaches an agreement on how they view the Friday the 13th franchise. If you're looking for you autumnal horror fix, look no further, true believers.

Geek Out Commentary: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 - Dream Warriors

October Rocktober's month of horror films continues with Chris making the third (And arguably the best) Nightmare on Elm Street film his pick of the month. Sam and Chris agree that as whole, the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise trumps all of its slasher movie contemporaries with its imaginative, atmospheric dream sequences and the charismatic menace of Freddy Krueger and this fan favorite is the high point of all that (Though all three Geek Out guys agree that it's all downhill from here for the series). Follow us as we watch one of the best horror movies to come out of the 80s.

This week proved to be an eventful one for Chris as he discusses two films he recently saw in theaters: The Equalizer and Gone Girl. He also recounts his love/hate relationship with the cult film The Room and his encounters with members of the film's cast. Sam reveals that he went to his first professional sporting event in two years and laments the DC area's inability to perform during the post-season. Finally, Jake and the gang discuss the Alien series, debate if Alien or Aliens is superior, the merits of Alien 3, and the recently released Alien: Isolation.

Geek Out Commentary: Shaun of the Dead

Now that it's October (Or ROCK-tober, as Chris likes to call it), we are well into Sam's favorite season: autumn. With Halloween in sight, the Geek Out gang has decided to dedicate the entire month's commentaries to horror movies with each Geek Out guy picking a favorite leading up to a double feature of sorts the week of Halloween. Sam, the lifelong zombie aficionado, has picked something that both qualifies as a horror film but with that comedic sensibility that he loves so much; you know we're talking about SHAUN OF THE DEAD. After the rough month of notoriously shoddy films, Halloween Horror Month kicks off with a hell of a palate cleanser in this British romantic zombie comedy.

The Geek Out trio launch into October by talking about a myriad of pop culture events. Chris and Jake discuss the premiere of Gotham and what they liked and didn't like about the show. Jake reveals that he thinks Superman is a more interesting character than Batman. Chris gives True Detective and The Walking Dead another shot and rediscovers his love of zombies. Sam finally finishes Sex and the City and compares notes with Chris about shows that lost their luster in the middle of their run. Sam also posits which characters the gang would like to write and Jake and Sam pay tribute to iconic ballplayer Derek Jeter. 9 out of 10 doctors agree this week's episode is chock full of pop culture content!
