One of the most critically and commercially successful entries in the venerable science fiction franchise, Star Trek IV saw the film series opt for a more light-hearted adventure with an underlying social conscious message against whaling after the darker, apocalyptic intensity of The Search for Spock. The celebration of 50 years of Star Trek and countdown to Star Trek Beyond continues here! After the critical disappointment to the first Star Trek film and its inflated budget, Paramount decided to revisit the classic science fiction franchise albeit with a heavily reduced budget and Leonard Nimoy's desire to kill of the character that he been associated with for over a decade. What we got was one of the finest sequels of all time that served as a big course correction from its predecessor and the first time we see James T. Kirk at moment of severe personal doubt. What many call the greatest Star Trek film of all time (And Sam agrees), it's time for The Wrath of Khan!

An adaptation of the Christopher Priest novel of the same name, The Prestige had been in development alongside Insomnia but Nolan tabled the film when he got the nod to do Batman Begins. X-Men: The Last Stand, while the most commercially successful in the series until X-Men: Days of Future Past, split audiences about the quality of the film itself. A lot of that criticism may have to do with the fact that three different directors were attached to the production of the film from script to screen which was rushed to theaters on Memorial Day weekend 2006. Bryan Singer ditched the third X-Men film to work on the first Superman film in 19 years as Superman: The Movie was one of the films that inspired him to become a filmmaker. Chris and Sam often regard Superman IV as better than Superman III but that doesn't mean Christopher Reeve's swan song to the franchise that made him a star is a good movie by any means. Despite its moralistic message and attempt to reduce the campy elements of the series that had overtaken it in Superman III, Superman IV is simply a film that ran out of money in mid-production leaving us with, well, this. And, in keeping with our appreciation of Richard Donner's work with the franchise (Especially given what happened immediately after), the version of the film we're recording a commentary for is the Richard Donner cut of the film! Much of Superman II was originally filmed simultaneously with its 1978 predecessor but because of trouble behind the scenes, it wouldn't be released until years later after extensive reshoots and a different director at the helm. Well, we've already done commentaries for the all the theatrically released Batman feature films, so now, as a countdown to the release of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, we're doing commentaries for all of Superman's! While most folks assume Superman's theatrical feature film history started with Christopher Reeve, it was actually started two decades before with George Reeves as the first feature film Man of Steel in Superman and the Mole Men. Released as a backdoor pilot for The Adventures of Superman television series and as a means to recoup production costs, Superman and the Mole Men really is just a longer episode of the series that it launched (And aired as such shortly thereafter), but hey, we did Star Wars: The Clone Wars and that was pretty much the same deal (We are completionists, after all). That's right, folks, the animated film that served as a means to introduce the public to the Cartoon Network TV series technically got a wide theatrical release so we're including it with our countdown for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Meant to bridge the gap between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, if this film feels like a bunch of episodes from the show stringed together, it's because it is; The Clone Wars movie was a last minute decision from George Lucas himself so if you're looking for another reason to criticize him, look no further! Geek Out Commentary: Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones

The countdown to Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues with...Attack of the Clones? Wait, where's Return of the Jedi? Like we said in our first week of Star Wars commentaries, we're doing this countdown in Machete Order so that means we get a flashback interlude to descent of Anakin Skywalker after The Empire Strikes Back's iconic plot twist! Attack of the Clones...it isn't regarded as one of the best Star Wars films, to put it politely, but it's generally regarded as a significant improvement over its predecessor and it's Josh's favorite Star Wars prequel...but how does the rest of the gang feel about it? Geek Out Commentary: The Empire Strikes Back

The countdown to Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues! Critically derided upon its initial release, The Empire Strikes Back has gone on to become universally acclaimed as the best in the Star Wars series and one of the greatest films of all time...but do all the Geek Out Boys feel that way? Listen to hear what was added to the Special Edition of the film (Hint: Not as much as you'd think)! Learn the secret, dark history of Dagobah and the cave that Luke Skywalker must face! And learn more about what didn't actually make the final cut of the film! Darth Vader's mission to destroy the Rebel Alliance just got a lot more personal...

Geek Out Commentary: Star Wars

With the first live action Star Wars film in 10 years coming out next month and given how big Star Wars fans we are, was there any doubt we'd be doing a commentary series for the iconic science fiction franchise? In preparation for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we're doing commentaries for all the theatrically released (Sorry no holiday special or Ewok films, those were all for TV) Star Wars films in Machete order! Up first, the film that started it all and launched a global phenomena, it's Star Wars (Remember, it wasn't released as A New Hope until years later!)! Get psyched!

Geek Out Commentary: Skyfall

The countdown to SPECTRE concludes here as the gang watches the most recent James Bond film Skyfall. Critics felt that Quantum of Solace was a serious letdown for the franchise and, after a four-year hiatus, Daniel Craig roared back with the British superspy's most personal adventure ever as the film franchise celebrated its 50th anniversary. Many called Skyfall the greatest Bond film ever when it was first released...but that was 3 years ago; what do the boys think now? Watch along and listen to find out!

GoldenEye was the first Bond film for many of our generation and often held up in high regard because of it...but what do we think of it now? You know the name, you know the number. October Halloween Horror Month continues with Jake's pick: Rob Zombie's 2007 reimagining of John Carpenter's horror classic Halloween! Encouraged by Carpenter himself to make it his own, Zombie set out to answer many of the questions he had about the original Halloween and turn his focus on Michael Myers with the film serving as an origin story of sorts for the iconic serial killer. Geek Out Commentary: Licence To Kill

The countdown to Spectre continues with a wrap-up of the classic Bond series and Timothy Dalton's swan song to the venerable franchise. Licence to Kill is often regarded as one of the darkest films in the series and unfortunately didn't click with audiences when first released in 1989 but has since earned its fair share of fans since, including Jake who regards it as one of his favorite Bond films of all time. A favorite of many a Bond fan and Jake's favorite outing with Roger Moore, the 1997 film propelled the British super spy back into relevancy and would serve as the template for Moore's Bond for the rest of his tenure. Geek Out Commentary: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

The Geek Out countdown to Spectre continues with the oft-overlooked On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Notable for being the only official appearance of George Lazenby as James Bond and the first film in the series without the original 007, Sean Connery, On Her Majesty's Secret Service has enjoyed a second life of being hailed as the greatest Bond film by filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, Steven Soderbergh, and Bruce Timm. It also stands as Sam's personal favorite James Bond film for its impressive cinematography and a plot that hews the closest to the original Ian Fleming source material. In keeping tradition with that, we'll be doing our favorite James Bond film from each actor to officially portray the role. Geek Out Commentary: Dick Tracy

We've long teased doing a series of commentaries on pulp features from the 1990s and Jake has decided to pick a trilogy from the genre for his birthday! Kicking it off is the 1990 Dick Tracy starring Warren Beatty. After the runaway success of Batman in the summer of 1989, every studio wanted their own franchise. But instead of identifying Batman's success with superheroes, they thought it tied to the franchise's 1930s pulp origins! Thus, a revival of pulp properties with Dick Tracy leading the charge began? But how does the film hold up? What line from the film does Jake still quote semi-regularly? What technical aspect of the film grinds Chris' gears? Which actor was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in the film? Listen and find out!

Geek Out Commentary: Rocky V

For weeks, we've talked about our contempt and disdain for the fifth film in the Rocky series, a sentiment echoed by the series creator, Sylvester Stallone, himself. But, for the sake of completion as we prepare for Creed, we just had to do it too. Generally regarded as the weakest in the series critically and commercially, Rocky V was an attempt to bring the Italian Stallion back to his working class roots. Geek Out Commentary: Rocky III

Our countdown to Creed continues with Sam's personal favorite Rocky film, Rocky III! By 1982, Sylvester Stallone was feeling like a changed man from the struggling young actor/writer he had been less than a decade ago and wondered how his streetwise creation Rocky Balboa would respond to a similar level of success. This, coupled with a desire to pit the Philadelphia slugger against rising stars Mr. T and Hulk Hogan, led to what Sam calls one of the greatest third installments of any franchise ever. You've been....THUNDERSTRUCK! AC/DC references aside (And boy, does the Marvel Cinematic Universe love them), a standalone Thor film was probably the biggest risk of the Phase One MCU with a character so rooted in fantasy in a world that was, more or less, set firmly in the real world.
