Geek Out Commentary: Wild Wild West

The Geek Out trio finishes the inaugural month of commentaries with a revisiting of one of Chris' favorites, the Will Smith blockbuster adaptation of Wild Wild West. The commentary soon turns into a divisive affair with Chris unabashedly defending the film while Sam and Jake quickly resign themselves to the movie that Sam calls "the end of Will Smith's cinematic winning streak". All uphill from here, folks.

While the Geek Out trio are never at a loss for things to talk about, there hasn't been much in the way of huge events to discuss. The boys decide to take this opportunity to talk about things that have interested them for a long time. Jake goes into detail about his love of the band Kiss and pulp comic book heroes like The Phantom. Chris, the only fellow with eventful news this week, talks about the first day at his new job. Sam discusses his on-stage antics with Chris including his bizarre song introductions for unsuspecting audiences. This is the wrap-up to the first full month of catching up with the Geek Out guys.

Geek Out Commentary: Double Team

It's been pretty well established that the gang enjoys an entertaining terrible flick but the film that Sam inflicts on the Geek Out trio this week may be a bridge too far. Since the runaway success of 48 Hrs. and Lethal Weapon, Hollywood has been coming up with action team-ups for years but in 1997 they may have inadvertently created the greatest team-up of all time: Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dennis Rodman in the action flick Double Team. For Sam, it's a not-so-guilty pleasure, for Chris and Jake, it's a cinematic slog through hell. Sam and Chris attempt to turn all the Rodman-centric basketball references into a drinking game. Jake tries to remind Sam to suspend his disbelief. And the gang keeps track of all the blatant product placement and excuses to insert a tiger into the proceedings. Only one more week of shitty movies until we actually get to some good stuff after this, guys...

To celebrate their tenth episode, the Geek Out guys conduct an interview with an up-and-coming web comic writer based in New York City about his web comic, Tin. Jake finally finishes Breaking Bad and the gang discuss some of their favorite moments and characters from the universally acclaimed show. Sam and Chris talk about the possible future implosion of the movie and video game industries and how it relates to the recent release of the much-anticipated Destiny. Oh, and Sam sprains his foot from being old. Crackerjack episode.

Geek Out Commentary: Waterworld

How did Kevin Costner follow up his massive critical and commercial success with Dances with Wolves? By basically taking the general plot and visual aesthetic of Road Warrior and setting it on the open ocean with Waterworld. Even bracing themselves, the Geek Out trio find themselves unprepared for quite how bad Waterworld is. Jake, the lifelong Costner fan, finds that sitting through the aquatic stunt spectacular is one of the more difficult things he's had to do. Chris, who loved seeing the film in theaters as a child, reevaluates his stance on the movie upon this viewing. And Sam can't stop making observations about Kevin Costner's hair implants. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here...

It's been a fairly low key week for the Geek Out trio giving Chris the chance to revisit the Superman films he grew up with. The boys reflect on some of their favorite moments and mind-numbingly dumb scenes of the Man of Steel in cinema. Jake and Sam share their stories of the latest Baltimore Comic-Con where Jake's dad had a Greg-Off with Batman artist Greg Capullo and Sam managed to stump legendary comic book writer Mark Waid. Finally, Jake and Chris explain proper use of the word "sure". A real nailbiter this week, gang.

Geek Out Commentary: Megaforce

The inaugural month of Geek Out commentaries continues with another childhood cinematic CLASSIC, MegaForce! Part Star Wars, part Evel Knieval, and with more wardrobe changes than a Cher concert, this prime piece of 1980s filmmaking has Barry Bostwick of Rocky Horror Picture Show fame lead a phantom team of super elite biker soldiers saving the day, one explosion-filled desert fight at a time. For Chris and Jake, this is a first time viewing, for Sam, its a reminder that the good guys always win, even in the 80s!

And through it all, Chris manages to stay on top while functioning on 2 hours of sleep.
