Geek Out Commentary: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

The Geek Out countdown to Spectre continues with the oft-overlooked On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Notable for being the only official appearance of George Lazenby as James Bond and the first film in the series without the original 007, Sean Connery, On Her Majesty's Secret Service has enjoyed a second life of being hailed as the greatest Bond film by filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, Steven Soderbergh, and Bruce Timm. It also stands as Sam's personal favorite James Bond film for its impressive cinematography and a plot that hews the closest to the original Ian Fleming source material. Listen along as the boys watch the film that proved the franchise could survive without its original Scottish leading man.

Chris tells tale of his Labor Day weekend adventures in Alabama which leads to a wider discussion about the gang's motorcycle fantasties. Sam and Jake discuss their Force Friday woes (Though Sam scores some amiibo) which, surprise, surprise, leads to Josh trash talking Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But after Jake discusses the 2011 Conan the Barbarian and Jason Momoa's physique, things REALLY go off the rails with a celebrity impression outro for the ages. The Dark Ages, to be sure, but ages nonetheless.

Geek Out Commentary: Goldfinger

The next great Geek Out Commentary marathon is here! With James Bond's 24th official film, Spectre, coming out this year, we've decided to follow the model set by the lackluster video game 007 Legends with our own set of lackluster commentaries! In keeping tradition with that, we'll be doing our favorite James Bond film from each actor to officially portray the role. This week we start with the man most would still recognize as the quintessential James Bond actor, Sean Connery, in what many would hail his greatest film in the franchise: Goldfinger! It all starts here, gang...

What starts out as a relatively low-key episode takes an unexpected turn. Sam and Jake discuss their renewed interest in The Rolling Stones and Jake talks about the Fear the Walking Dead premiere. Chris finally watches Jackie Brown and he and Josh debate its merits. This leads to a wider discussion of the works of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez for the gang but, out of nowhere, Jake discovers on-air that iconic horror director, Wes Craven had passed. A tremendous loss leads the boys to deliver their own tributes to man that created A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream.

Geek Out Commentary: Dick Tracy

We've long teased doing a series of commentaries on pulp features from the 1990s and Jake has decided to pick a trilogy from the genre for his birthday! Kicking it off is the 1990 Dick Tracy starring Warren Beatty. After the runaway success of Batman in the summer of 1989, every studio wanted their own franchise. But instead of identifying Batman's success with superheroes, they thought it tied to the franchise's 1930s pulp origins! Thus, a revival of pulp properties with Dick Tracy leading the charge began? But how does the film hold up? What line from the film does Jake still quote semi-regularly? What technical aspect of the film grinds Chris' gears? Which actor was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in the film? Listen and find out!
